Drawing Class #4

 Mary Cassatt

MATERIALS:

drawing, charcoal or bristol paper
charcoal, pencil , sharpie pens , collage, textured paint (your choice) erasers
tracing paper
sketch pad
brushes (if painting)

IN CLASS ASSIGNMENT:

POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE:

This is a study of figure-ground relationships, also known as figure and field or foreground and back- ground. The space of the drawing is flat, balanced between black ground and white figure or reversed. Do not use modeling or value. Positive and negative space must be dealt with equally. This considers the unity of the drawing and a sense of space. Concen- trate on the picture plane as well as the objects.

IN CLASS:

Draw out a different composition from the contour drawing in your sketchbook.

Tranfer the composition to the final drawing surface. Complete a positive negative interpretation.

The objects brought to class and the museum drawings will be combined subjects for in-class assignments.

Suggested materials and techniques:
1.Put down charcoal and erase out the positive areas. 2. Use water with charcoal to create the black areas. 3. Use marker to outline white and fill black areas. 4. Use acrylic paint or black ink.
5. Use collage.

LONGTERM ASSIGNMENT:

Combine sculpture with personal objects in one composition. Keep in mind both the personal and the cultural aspects of these objects and the overall subject matter. Use the subject matter from these objects for the next in-class assignments and continue the drawings at home for homework. Use regular drawing paper, bristol board or charcoal paper depending on your media. Complete three final drawings for the critique. We will go over the techniques in class:

1. Shape 2. Positive and negative 3. Value Today, start the positive and negative drawing in class.

Homework: Bring in (part 1) of your project, the contour drawing, 90% complete to show at the start of class. Please have a finished sketch/drawing in your sketchbook of the museum object. If you enlarge it as it is in your sketchbook, I suggest you use the grid technique on tracing paper and transfer to your larger paper.

2.  Be sure to have all materials needed to complete (part 2) positive/negative, during our class time. The black and white aspects are required. What materials you use to complete the project are up to you. You can use texture, collage, paint, ink etc.
Be sure to have your personal objects with you again to work with. They are an important part of your materials. You have to work from them directly. Do not leave them behind and try to work from memory. You will use these objects in a different composition along with the museum piece for the second portion of the project. If you change your objects from what you showed me last class, that is fine. The same objects, however, have to appear in all three parts of the project.
