The class was broken into two parts, first being a lecture on the above paradigms, including an introduction lecture about attendance, lateness and homework. Expectations were laid out. Detaching from outcome was a large part of the lecture – not judging while working- simply doing the work.
We discussed drawing with the left hand, and the importance of being aware and focused while working on drafting artwork.
The second part of the class was a lesson in portraiture – the class split in half, one side drawing the other, rotating seats every ten minutes. Two 5-minute drawing were produced of each student first using their right hand, second using their left – then making marks and tightening up design with the right hand.
I engaged the class on how to create unique and interesting line with pencil, not to rely on the point of the lead all the time (sharpen often!) – to block out areas for design purposes, as well as the dynamics of proportion regarding the human head.
Next week we will go over grid systems, view finders, and start to study 1 and 2 point perspective – and continue our portraiture study.
